News from the Wilderness
A series created in response to a 2010 artist's residency at Denali National Park and Preserve (Alaska) in the East Fork Cabin.
The "News from the Wilderness" series examines how animals are represented in the popular news media. In the months since I visited Denali, I have noticed a particular story and image used again and again in stories about animal / human interactions. Stories of animal “attacks” are quite sensationalized and in several stories about grizzly bears – I saw that a particular stock image of a menacing bear face with the mouth open was used – regardless of the location and in some cases the species of bear in question.
