In the darkness of a moonless night, a passage unfolds, a quiet river of life in the sky. Night Passages: Bunting is a poetic meditation on an incredible journey—the nocturnal migration of songbirds navigating by starlight. This piece is a homage to the unseen. The blue of a bunting is structural color without pigment, a trick of light. Sculpting, cutting, and stitching creates a textural surface that also plays with light and shadow. Night Passages: Bunting invites viewers to look up. It asks that they consider the silent, vast, and ancient rhythms happening just beyond perception. I created this work to represent longing and connection. It expresses the desire to bear witness to the spectacle of nature and to feel our entanglement with the other lives that share our earth. In this piece, the fragility of the handmade objects reflects the precarity of these journeys in a changing world. I hold reverence for the mystery of birds and empathy for their struggle.
